A Look into the BSB51319 Diploma of Work Health and Safety – Part 1

There is a definite push for Senior WHS practitioners to hold the latest WHS qualification and BSB51319 Diploma of Work Health and Safety was released to the public on 30/8/19.

The new qualification includes some additional units and in particular we would like to detail what BSBWHS518 Manage WHS hazards associated with maintenance and use of plant covers off.

Plant carries its own unique and independent WHS hazards and these include but are not limited to; electricity, fuel, sharps, pressure, weight etc. In order to identify the hazards we need to be able to access the relevant sources of information and conduct a personal inspection on site to note how they are being used. We then need to enter the various elements into the organisations policies and procedures.

We show how to apportion risk to the hazards and record and report on WHS risk assessment having due consideration for the legislation on foot.

The development of risk controls to be implemented consistent with the hierarchy of controls is discussed and considered as is the methods we can choose to monitor and review the effectiveness of the controls.

Some plant requires registration, licensing and or certification, how do we determine and action that?

All items of plant have unique methods, processes and procedures for safe operation and these need to be identified and converted into training programs to ensure the safety of all operators. The unit is quite complex and is covered in detail during class.
