More on TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment

Well, time marches on and we are certainly fielding a lot of questions from perspective learners. It is interesting because everyone we speak to agrees that it is unreasonable to expect someone to complete a TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment in a very short period yet several of the same folk think they should be able to complete the qualification quickly; now that’s an oxymoron for sure.

We recently had a request from one of our major corporate accounts. One of their line managers wanted to know why his staff had to do so many assessments when the previous people had completed totally in 10 days. I would add here they did not do their TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment with HBA Learning Centres because we had no one complete in such a short time frame, it would have been non-compliant. Our compliance manager Carolyn put together a brief overview of what has to be done in just a small part of the qualification and we thought we would share it with you:

The TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualification has a high volume of assessment tasks due to the addition of the unit TAEASS502 Design and Develop assessment tools, the review of the other units and feedback from industry consultation. All of these variables have seen the requirements from the training package to complete the qualification increase the amount of work for a learner and RTO.
HBA Learning Centres as a registered training organisation is required to comply with the Standards for RTOs 2015, which are regulated by the Australian Quality Skills Authority. For example, Standard 1, clause 1.1 states “The RTO’s training and assessment strategies and practices, including the amount of training they provide, are consistent with the requirements of training packages and VET accredited courses and enable each learner to meet the requirements for each unit of competency or module they are enrolled in.
The assessment cluster alone, which consists of TAEASS502, TAEASS402, TAEASS403, TAEASS401, requires learners to

  • Plan assessment activities and process five times, 2 must be for RPL. This requires learners to develop assessment plans and an instrument for 5 different entire units of competency
  • Design and develop assessment tools, three times, 1 must be for RPL. This requires the learners to develop 3 entire assessment tools which could be used within an assessment environment. These tools require the learner to develop assessment approaches (instructions to learners, assessors, marking guides), assessment plans, assessment instruments (meets parts of the require performance evidence for this unit)
  • Validation of assessment tools, 3 times. This requires each learner to participate in a validation session 3 times
  • Assess competence, 5 times, 1 must be conducted using an RPL assessment

What I have outlined above, only meets part of the overall assessment requirements of the assessment cluster and does not meet the requirements of any one entire unit of competency found within this cluster.

As an RTO, HBA Learning Centres may only issue AQF certification documentation to a learner whom it has assessed as meeting the requirements of the training product as specified in the relevant training package.”

We are constantly told by people on the telephone “I must complete this as quickly as possible as I have a new position to start in 3 weeks’ time” or “my boss wants me to have this by next month” and so it goes on. We assure you, nobody and we mean nobody can complete this qualification in such a short time frame.

Remember it takes 2 or 3 years full time to get the qualification necessary to teach children at school and 3 years full time, post grad, to get the qualification to teach at University. The VET qualification could not possibly take only 10 days to complete as we all have to meet what is called the Volume of Learning, you will learn what this is in our course.

Delivery Models

At HBA Learning Centres you have 2 delivery models:

Self-Paced PLUS is, as the name implies, a course that you do in your own time. Offered free of charge with the course is 5 days of face to face facilitation where our trainer will provide you with the underpinning knowledge necessary plus you will be introduced to the learning activities. When you leave us you have to complete the learning activities, a self-paced reflection log, which is reviewed by one of our assessors. This log will allow you the opportunity to demonstrate your understanding. Once this is demonstrated you will then move onto the assessment tasks.

Blended Delivery is facilitated over 16 days and is broken into 3 clusters, Design, Delivery and Assessment. These clusters may be separated by whatever time frame suits you as long as you complete the course within 18 months. In this delivery model you obtain the underpinning knowledge plus you complete the learning activities. You are left with the assessment tasks to complete in your own time.

Whatever model you choose our staff and resources are in position to support you through your journey.
