Understanding a new Unit within the BSB41419 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety

In the latest WHS qualification BSB41419 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety we have introduced a new unit BSBWHS418 Assist with managing WHS compliance of contractors.

We have been asked what this entails many times since the new qualification was released so we thought it might be of interest to you if we provided some insight.

As you would undoubtedly know there is a legislated requirement for an enterprise to ensure all activities on its site/s are conforming to the Work Health and Safety Act (relevant to its jurisdiction) and its amendments plus any subordinate law such as codes of practice. This unit takes a detailed view of the responsibilities and obligations involved.

The first element of the unit ensures the WHS practitioner clearly identifies the scope of supply of the contractor and this causes a review of all the required documentation and appropriate legislative requirements. This activity leads you to be able to clearly identify and document the specific WHS requirements appropriate to that scope of supply.

The unit then moves onto showing you how to provide contractors with access to all the documentation they will need and to assist with the site induction. We will show you what documentation you are required to detail as part of the induction phase.

Documentation provides all policies and procedures plus forms instruments to collect data to prove compliance. You need to be able to review the documentation detailed by and for the contractor plus participate in actual inspections to ensure compliance is maintained. If there is any non-compliance you will need to document and investigate these, making any necessary adjustments. This will entail consultation with the contractor and the escalation of serious non compliance to a higher authority.

This is a high level unit that concentrates on legislation and auditing activities and is a must have for all safety professionals.
