Work Health and Safety Qualifications

We field a lot of question about the Certificate IV and the Diploma on any given day and we would like to cover off some of the repetitive questions we receive:

  • I have an old BSB41407 Certificate IV in OHS, what do I have to do to update the qualification? BSB41407 was quite loose with its packaging rules and as such there is a huge variation in what any 2 RTO’s may have offered. We map old qualifications for free and typically we note there are often 3 or 4 units where Credit Transfer can apply, this obviously reduces the cost and the workload to complete BSB41419 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety.

  • I believe I can complete the course in 5 days with you is that right? This is not correct, the delivery model we offer is called  Blended Delivery and that merges the activity of having a trainer with self paced learning; when you leave us you will have some practical activities to complete and the knowledge questions to answer. What we can tell you is you will complete the course much quicker with the help of one of our specialist trainers.

  • How long will it take me to complete your course? Frequently asked and impossible for anyone to answer unless the RTO offers a course over a finite full delivery period such a 1 day a week for 1 year. What we can say is we do see a huge variation as some people have zero experience in WHS and others have been working in an environment where they deal with WHS every single moment of their work life (mining, transport, warehousing, manufacturing etc). Typically we see completion times anywhere from 3 months to 7 months for this course. Some do it a little quicker and some take longer.

  • I can not use a computer, can I write out the answers in hard copy? No is the answer here as the use of technology is a requirement of the 10 units of competency that form the qualification.

  • Where do you run it? We facilitate the course from our various offices so those that feel they need to physically be in the room as the trainer can do so however our biggest take up is the Virtual Classroom where you simply connect to the same course online form the comfort of home or anywhere that suits you. In a course it is quite common to have say 10 learners and there might be 2 physically in the room and 8 connected online. There is no difference in outcomes, learning pathways, interactions with he class and trainer etc.

  • What units do you offer? Our standard offering consists of:
  • BSBWHS412 Assist with workplace compliance with WHS laws
  • BSBWHS413 Contribute to implementation and maintenance of WHS consultation and
  • participation processes
  • BSBWHS414 Contribute to WHS risk management
  • BSBWHS416 Contribute to workplace incident response
  • BSBWHS415 Contribute to implementing WHS management systems
  • BSBWHS418 Assist with managing WHS compliance of contractors
  • BSBSUS401 Implement and monitor environmentally sustainable work practices
  • BSBINS401 Analyse and present research information
  • BSBWRT411 Write complex documents
  • BSBCMM411 Make presentations

  • I hold the old BSB51307 Diploma of OHS and want to get the new one, can I just enrol in BSB51319 Diploma of Work Health and Safety? Unfortunately you can not. The OHS Diploma allowed someone to enrol without any entry requirements. The new qualification states you must hold the 5 core units of BSB41419 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety before you enrol in the Diploma. HBA has a special package for this.
